Succession: Quest of Fire Book II
I love good Christian fantasy! I LOVE good Christian fantasy! I LOVE GOOD CHRISTIAN FANTASY!
Gosh, it feels good to get your hands on something that is good and clean and CHRISTIAN! Armstrong’s Succession is a success (yes, I did that on purpose. Ha!) it feels like an epic packed into just a few hundred pages. If I had a single complaint, it would be that it is too short. I wanted more of it before I was even finished.
I’ve been blessed enough to read and review the first novel in this series; I remember making a comparison to Game of Thrones in my last review—I’m going to do the same here. Not just because it takes place in a Medieval setting, I think it is fair to say this book compares to GOT in its excellent world-building and equally entertaining style of writing. As much as I like to compare this series to my favorite series ever, I must admit that at this point the books, Succession stands on its own. It is not just a comparative novel to GOT, it isn’t the “Christian version” of some other great fantasy. It is its own story, and it is excellent in its own right.
Now, as good and descriptive as the writing was, I did enjoy the actual story. The best way I can describe this book is that it is a tale of a boy becoming a man. Meredoch had everything lined up for him, a great family—a luxurious house—and the knowledge he would one day make a difference in the world he lived in. But all of that comes crashing down around him when tragedy strikes his family, and his honor and reputation is ruined. Meredoch’s family is exiled, leaving our protagonist and readers alike to wonder how on earth he would bring about a great peace to the world when he isn’t even welcome in his own city.
The book fast forwards to the future, where we get to see Meredoch a little older and a little wiser. He still has his own share of struggles, but his character molds into someone you learn to love. Christian themes are easily woven into the story, which I appreciate with the utmost respect and adoration.
It isn’t everyday that you stumble across a gem like this. I am so pleased to have this book in the Christian community! I highly recommend it to Christian readers; anyone with a love for fantasy, Medieval settings, and adventure will want to get their hands on this.
