I was given a copy of this book by a very kind author who took the time to explain a few things about his work before I began reading. I was given fair warning that there might be grammatical errors and mistakes, so I did not take any hiccups into consideration when I sat down to write this review. My rating is a reflection of how I felt about the story, style of writing, and characterization—not the editing or proofreading. While I’m really glad I was warned about possible errors, I think it’s fair for me to mention them here. The Web Runner is indeed a unique and interesting book but it does have some mistakes so I think readers should be warned so they aren’t surprised or turned off while going through the book.
Now, how did I actually feel about this supernatural adventure? I thought it was creative but also to the point. Hitching says this book is a combination of real-life experiences and fictional creativity—its up to us to separate the truth from the fiction but there’s certainly a lot to enjoy while we sort through the story. I personally liked the romantic side of the book; like I said, the story is very short so there isn’t very much time to dive deeply into relationships and development between characters but what we are given is sweet, charming, and even emotional on some levels.
I think this book needs a little work, but the author is dedicated and that’s the sort of attitude that tells me this isn’t the end of the line. What I admired most about this story was that it was inspired by Hitching’s faith and his own life. As a Christian writer myself, I can totally identify with wanting to share your own story with the world and wanting to include your faith in that tale. I think its important to see the author in the writing and I could definitely find Hitching’s voice throughout his writing. For me, there was a strong sense of personality in the tone and the narration of the book. The structure and wording could use a little work but in time I’m sure it will become an incredibly well written story.
The plot was something you’d expect from a supernatural novel. There is demon fighting, traveling through time and space and even playing tricks with your mind. There are many aspects of this book that lay the foundations of an awesome Christian science-fiction; I have the highest hopes for this book and look forward to its future.
I would recommend this book to readers looking for a new adventure and anyone with an open mind who can set aside small errors and enjoy watching a new author grow. Those who enjoy science-fiction, time travel, and supernatural novels will appreciate this most.
