Book Review: The Golden Cord
The Golden Cord is the second book in a Christian series I’ve had the opportunity to read. As always, The Rebel Christian is dedicated to showcasing good quality Christian entertainment, whether in books, music, or otherwise, so I was very interested when the Hopkins brothers returned for a second review.
The review I left for the first book in the series was filled with mixed emotions; while it was a very long time ago that I read and reviewed the first installment, I can remember that I was not entirely pleased. That being said, I went into this book with no expectations or judgment. When it comes to a series, you don’t always enjoy every single book—I’ve read every book in the Game of Thrones series, some of them more than once, and I can pinpoint which ones are worth skipping. But disliking one book in a series shouldn’t mean the entire series isn’t worth a read and that is certainly the case with this second installment.
The Golden Cord is filled with action, emotion, and a very real sense that this could have happened in the past. What I liked so much about this book was the attention to detail; descriptive paragraphs were imaginative and so historically accurate, as a history nerd—especially one who adores ancient history—I was swept away by the writing.
From page one, I knew this was going to be good. There is truly something special about historical fiction, especially ones based in Christianity, but when you find a book that is very clearly well-researched, immersive, and has a small sense of realism to it, you have the closest thing you will ever get to a perfect book.
Aside from the research and historical accuracy, I did enjoy the plot of the story. Having these two brothers—twins, which is very cute because the authors are a pair of twin brothers, haha—living completely different lives gives you two unique perspectives. Their lives tell you more than what is demanded by the plot; excellent writing and detail actually allowed readers to grasp a sense of what it was really like to live in a biblical period as a doctor, a soldier, a peasant, etc. I felt like the Hopkins brothers painted a picture of life that is important for Christians to see and I’m glad I got to witness it for myself.
This book takes you deeper than the first and it has converted me into a true fan. I absolutely look forward to the next installment and hope the Hopkins authors continue writing excellent Christian fiction!
If you enjoy historical fiction, action thrillers, immersive writing, and excellent world-building this is certainly for you. This book will be most appreciated by Christian audiences.
