Conner's Odyessey: Book I Discovery
By Ian C. Bristow
This is definitely a book of nostalgia, a mixture of all the wonderful dreams and imaginary worlds I visited—or at least wanted to visit—as a child. Bristow has incorporated some fun and imaginative ideas combined with great writing and a unique narrative.
The narrative is probably what I liked most about this book. Bristow is one of those authors who writes like reality, the way people actually talk and feel. He really made the emotions of the characters come through in a way that made the readers just as emotional and into the story. I got the same feeling I had when reading Alice in Wonderland for the first time; two different feelings, what? And WOW!
This is a book of adventure stuffed with imagination, humor, and intelligence. I say intelligence because as much as I was able to be a nit-picky reviewer, I was also able to be a reader and just sit back and feel awed and amazed at the development, structure, and strength of the cast. The world building was top-notch, as well as the description, dialogue, and characterization. I’ll admit, Conner was a bit bratty in the beginning of the story but it was that immaturity that really highlighted his character’s growth as the novel progressed.
I did notice a few grammatical errors while reading but nothing that took away from the story. I was very glad to be a part of this book, as a reader and reviewer. I look forward to the rest of the series.
I would recommend this book to any fans of children’s fiction but especially to those who like a good adventure. If you enjoyed Chronicles of Narnia, then this would definitely intrigue you.
There are so many elements that will jump off the pages at you but you will be stunned with the talent portrayed through the pages by how Bristow keeps it all together. So much happens that this book could have easily fallen apart, hats off to Bristow for keeping it together and presenting a wonderful story that’s enjoyable for all ages.
