The Cavern

This is a very interesting Christian supernatural novel. I really liked it, and I promise I’m not being bias just because I also happen to be an author of Christian supernatural fiction.
In all honesty, the book is good. The subject is intriguing, even the description draws you in, the characters are cool and the twists and turns in the story are not predictable—that’s always a plus. The opening to the story was probably the strongest point in the writing. It gave us a little bit of a backstory to the real protagonist even though he isn’t seen until a little later. The tragedy that happens in the prologue is almost unbelievable, I kept waiting for it to turn into a bad dream or something but it didn’t and that surprisingly pleased me. I’m glad to see a fellow Believer who is willing to ‘go there’ and push the limits and boundaries of what Christian fiction can be.
That being said, it’s important to know that this is Christian FICTION. Aside from that, it is not BIBLICAL fiction. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. This is a creative and fictional take on what COULD or WOULD happen if an ‘inexperienced’ angel was assigned to a strangely unique boy. That’s a fantastic concept that could have been told in the secular realm but it’s made so much more interesting by embracing the Christian elements that are so prevalent throughout the reading.
I liked the link between the supernatural and the natural realms. I liked the connection between the characters and the overall plotline of the story, I’m absolutely glad I had the chance to read this novel but I do feel that the story had one slight flaw. The only thing that bugged me was that the structure of the story had one consistency; a lot of the sentences would start with the same word or phrase. ‘She did this’ or ‘he went over there’. Now, that’s not an issue that made me want to rip the book to shreds or throw my kindle out the window but I did notice it and felt that it was worth pointing out.
All in all, I very much enjoyed this story and I would recommend it to Christian readers looking for an awesome twist on their faith. This is a great read for fans of Christian fantasy or anyone looking to explore the ‘darker’ side of Christian fiction. I think everyone who picks this up will end up enjoying it.
