Grim Fate: Grimly Ever After Book II

I kept in contact with the author of this series after reviewing the first book because I enjoyed it very much. The concept of the grim reaper and some sort of romance budding with a human intrigued me. The first book was creative, conceptually refreshing, and definitely a departure from your average supernatural romance. This second book is a strong continuation in the series.

There’s not much I can tell you about this story that you won’t find out just from reading the (lengthy) description. Xia is now an Angel of Death but this won’t interrupt her relationship with Shilah for at least a few years—or so she thought. The first book in this series was all about getting Xia and Shilah together but this next book is about keeping them together. Their relationship is tested right alongside Xia’s skills as a reaper and her willingness to adjust to her new responsibilities as an Angel of Death.

New concepts and interesting ideas are introduced in this story, including one I found to be very cool. The Three Horsemen, as opposed to the Four Horsemen of the Book of Revelation in the Holy Bible. This is a story that deals with angels, reapers, and the afterlife so biblical references were bound to show up at some point—and in some ways they did in the first book. I will, by no means, label this book as a Christian book but as a Believer myself I definitely picked up on the similarities. If you’re a reader who is not very religious then you probably won’t even notice the comparisons, as they are so subtle you wouldn’t recognize them unless you regularly read the King James Holy Bible.

I really enjoyed the development between Xia and Shilah in this next installment, their relationship is very strong and it doesn’t come off as cheesy or overplayed. I believed in their romance and I was very much interested in finding out what would happen between them. This makes a great read for any fan of romance but the story itself is interesting with or without it. Because this series focuses on a character who is struggling to become something that will affect all of humanity, Bynum focuses very much on character growth and development. We get to see Xia grow as an individual but also as a reaper, as a girlfriend, and as our hero. She is someone I found to be an enjoyable protagonist and I look forward to seeing more of her in the future.

I would recommend this book to readers of all ages. Any fans of supernatural romance and fantasy will definitely love this. It is so original and exciting and its refreshing to have the female in a position of power for once! Bynum delivers more than expected in this wonderful addition to such an awesome series.
